01 | The Pincushion Protea was one of the first plants that took my breath away when I moved to South Africa. Their unusual shape, extreme colour, and delicate beauty were the triggers that convinced me to paint these stunning South African plants and landscapes using the Asian brush painting technique.
02 | The sight of one single helicopter appearing at dawn to fight the fire inspired me to create this scene. Even though the situation seemed hopeless the helicopter succeeded in extinguishing the fires and saved lots of vegetation, animals and houses in the neighbourhood.

FROM MOUNT FUJI TO TABLE MOUNTAIN
From the beginning, art has been a constant presence in Tanja’s life, guiding and shaping her journey. Throughout her years living in the serene landscapes of Japan, she developed the delicate and precise art form of Sumi-e brushwork, a style of monochromatic painting executed in ink. In pursuing this practice, Tanja captured the intricate complexity of the natural world, embodying the graceful fluidity of brushstrokes that mirrored the tranquil, meditative landscapes around her.
Since making South Africa her home in 2011, she has offered a fresh and harmonious perspective, drawing inspiration from the Cape’s natural beauty. From the towering mountains to the gentle curves of flora and fauna, her art captures the region’s rhythm, proposing a moment of stillness and a space to slow down, all while honouring the expressive qualities of the ancient Sumi-e traditions.
